Olympic celebrations may delay transit services tonight



Update — 7:30 p.m.: Expect delays for all buses and streetcars crossing Yonge Street from Eglinton Avenue south to Front Street.


Update — 7:21 p.m.: Readers advise that Yonge and Dundas still blocked as people are filling Yonge Street to celebrate. Streetcars trying to divert. Expect delays on most surface routes crossing Yonge Street downtown tonight, especially, 94 Wellesley, 501 Queen, 505 Dundas and 506 Carlton. Everyone’s ecstatic!


Update — 7:06 p.m.: More celebrations blocking bus service along the 71 Runnymede, 77 Swansea and 79 Scarlett Rd routes at Bloor Street West and Runnymede Road and at Runnymede Station.


Update — 7:05 p.m.: Readers report from 300 to 500 people filling the intersection of Yonge and Eglinton. Bus service is at a standstill.


Update — 6:58 p.m.: Celebrants have also closed the intersection of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue East. Passengers on buses operating along the 34 Eglinton East, 51 Leslie, 54 Lawrence East, 56 Leaside, 97 Yonge and 100 Flemingdon Park routes should expect detours and delays.


Toronto Police Service officers have closed off Yonge - Dundas Square because so many people had crammed the square to celebrate Team Canada’s hockey victory over Team USA — and Canada’s impressive showing at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

Expect delays along the TTC’s 505 Dundas streetcar line between Victoria and Bay Streets tonight.
