GO raises fares, March 20

Starting Saturday, March 20, you’ll be paying more to ride GO Transit buses and trains.

At today’s meeting, the Metrolinx board of directors approved raising fares and setting up a more equal discount structure for GO passengers.

The changes include:

  • increasing fares by a flat rate of 25 cents that applies to every adult single-ride ticket, regardless of where you’re starting or ending your trip; and
  • changing the discount structure for multiple-ride tickets and passes so that these discounts are equal across all GO fare zones. (All 10-ride tickets offer passengers a 7.5 percent discount over 10 single-ride tickets and monthly passes offer a 17.5 percent discount over 40 single-ride tickets.)

According to GO, this fare increase is in line with previous GO fare increases and with increases that other transit agencies have recently imposed.

GO says that it has one of the best cost-recovery ratios for transit systems in the world. It has two major sources of operating revenue — your fares, which will make up about 81 percent of GO’s operating costs for the fiscal year 2010 - 11 and a provincial subsidy.
