YRT "street furniture" open houses, February 4, March 3, 24

York Region Transit is inviting members of the public to review and comment on proposals for “street furniture” at transit stops in York Region.

The Region of York approved new guidelines for designing street furniture in June. The Region’s goal was to find a contemporary design, and maintain a consistent appearance for, transit shelters, benches and waste or recycling containers at transit stops. The new street furniture guidelines focus on comfort, safety and accessibility, while identifying local municipalities and reducing advertising clutter.

York Regional Council also directed staff to find two suppliers — one to design the shelters and another to install and maintain the furniture for 15 years. The second supplier could also sell advertising on the various furniture elements.

YRT is hosting three “public information centres” — or open houses — about the street furniture program.

On Thursday, February 4, you can talk with staff about your ideas for designing street furniture. On Wednesday, March 3, staff will present several design concepts for you to review. Finally, on Wednesday, March 24, staff will present their final design.

Region staff estimate that designing the street furniture will cost $200,000. They also projected that installing and maintaining the street furniture will cost about $42 million during the 15-year advertising contract term. As a program that generates revenue, suppliers would ultimately deliver the street furniture program at no cost to the Region.

YRT and Viva have more than 4,500 bus stops throughout York Region.
