The driver of a sports utility vehicle escaped injury after crashing into a GO Transit train at the railway track crossing on Stachan Avenue south of Wellington Street West in Toronto today.
The collision occurred at one of the most vulnerable spots in the entire GO system and nearly shut down GO service on most lines, resulting in lengthy commutes for hundreds of passengers. (Only passengers traveling along the 61 Richmond Hill and 71 Stouffville lines missed the effect of this single incident.)
GO services are now operating (almost) normally, but here’s some of what happened to GO services earlier today:
65 Barrie line:
The train that left Barrie South GO Station at 5:43 a.m. did not stop at York University GO Station and arrived at Union Station 68 minutes — an hour and 8 minutes — late.
The train that left Barrie South at 6:15 a.m. arrived at Union 53 minutes late.
The train that left Barrie South at 6:50 a.m. arrived Union 20 minutes late.
The train that left Barrie South at 7:20 a.m. arrived at Union 13 minutes late.
31 Georgetown line:
The train that left Bramalea GO Station at 5:55 a.m. arrived at Union Station115 minutes — an hour and 45 minutes — late.
The train that left Georgetown GO Station at 6:22 a.m. - arrived Union 81 minutes — an hour and 21 minutes — late.
The train that left Georgetown at 6:47 a.m. arrived at Union 68 minutes — an hour and 8 minutes — late.
The train that left Georgetown at 7:06 a.m. arrived at Union 75 minutes — an hour and 15 minutes — late from Bloor GO Station. GO modified this train to make all stops to Union.
GO canceled the train that usually leaves Bramalea at 7:38 a.m. to arrive at Union at 8:14 a.m.
The train that left Georgetown at 7:43 a.m. arrived Union 33 minutes late. . GO has cancelled the train that usually leave Bramalea at 9:20 a.m. to arrive at Union at 9:55 a.m. GO is operating buses for passengers travelling between Bramalea and Etobicoke North. GO is advising passengers travelling between Weston and Bloor Stations to use the TTC to travel or find another way to get around this morning.
09 Lakeshore East line:
GO cancelled the train that usually leaves Oshawa GO Station at 8:25 a.m. to arrive at Union Station at 9:15 a.m.
01 Lakeshore West line:
The train that left Clarkson GO Station at 7:58 a.m. arrived at Union Station 15 minutes late.
The train that left Milton GO Station at 6:23 a.m. arrived at Union Station 31 minutes late.
The train that left Milton at 6:48 a.m. arrived at Union 12 minutes late.
An problem with signals that did not result from this incident delayed the train that left Milton at 7:23 a.m. for 24 minutes and the train that left Milton at 7:38 a.m. for 22 minutes.
The train that left Milton at 7:53 a.m. arrived at Union 18 minutes late.
The train that left Milton at 8:08 a.m. arrived at Union 14 minutes late.
Metrolinx proposes building an overpass to carry Strachan Avenue across the tracks at this point as part of its project to expand the Georgetown South rail corridor.
