This weekend we catch up on some recent news stories.
City of Hamilton contractors started last week to work on the new transit terminal on MacNab Street South in downtown Hamilton. The project includes building a new terminal building, bus shelters, platforms and rebuilding MacNab Street South between King and Main Streets West.
The contractor started on Monday, October 19 and expects to finish the project next August. The City is closing MacNab Street South between King and Main Streets West during the project.
Building a new transit terminal is part of the first stage of a master plan to revitalize the Gore Park area. After the City has opened the new facility, the Hamilton Street Railway will relocate the terminal for many of its routes from the south side of King Street East (south of Gore Park) to the new terminal. Removing buses from the south leg of King Street East will let the City improve the pedestrian environment in that area.
The new transit terminal will feature a green roof, a heated platform and new shelters, public washrooms and better access for wheelchairs and bicycles.
To prepare for the project, the HSR rerouted several downtown bus routes on Sunday, June 28.
