Church / Adelaide construction affects TTC services,
starting October 5



Update — October 26: Most work at Church Street and Adelaide Street East has ended and buses and streetcars have resumed regular service. Work now proceeds between Carlton Street and Dundas Street East.

Update — October 19: The project continues. Since the TTC introduces a new 145 Downtown / Humber Bay express service on Adelaide Street East, starting today, the work will also delay or detour buses operating along that route.


Update — October 15: Although the intersection has re-opened to traffic, the work continues to delay or detour express buses operating along Adelaide Street East. Since contractors have not finished working on the streetcar tracks, streetcars operating along the 508 Lakeshore route continue to detour.


Update — October 7: this post updates the detours for 508 Lake Shore streetcars when the intersection is closed after 6 a.m. on October 9. The City and TTC have announced that they are closing the intersection for one more day. The intersection will re-open at 6 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, instead of 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14.


Starting on Monday, October 5, the City of Toronto is restricting traffic at the intersection of Church Street and Adelaide Street East as part of the ongoing City / TTC project to rebuild the streetcar tracks along both streets.

On Monday, October 5, the City restricts traffic along Adelaide East to just one lane at Church. Starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, October 9 until 6 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, the City is completely closing the intersection. After 6 a.m. on October 15, the City will again restrict traffic along Adelaide East to just one eastbound lane and along Church Street to just one northbound and one southbound lane.


The work affects service along several TTC routes: 141 Downtown / Mt Pleasant express; 142 Downtown / Avenue Rd express; 143 Downtown / Beach express; 144 Downtown / Don Valley express; 508 Lake Shore.

Buses and streetcars operate along these routes Mondays to Fridays only during rush hours. The TTC has not scheduled detours from Monday, October 5 until the end of service on Thursday, October 8 or after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14. However, if traffic delays bus and streetcar services it may detour the routes earlier than it planned.


142 Downtown / Avenue Rd express

From 6 a.m. on Friday, October 9 until 6 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, southbound buses operate along their regular route to Adelaide Street East and Victoria Street, then detour:

northward along Victoria Street to just north of Adelaide Street East,
ending their trips.

Northbound buses start their trips on Victoria Street just north of Adelaide Street East, then proceed:

northward along Victoria to Richmond Street East,
resuming their regular route westward along Richmond East.

Southbound buses skip their regular stops on Adelaide Street East, east of Victoria Street, on Church Street at Lombard Street and on Richmond Street East, west of Church Street, where they usually end their trips. Instead they end their trips at a temporary stop on Victoria Street north of Adelaide Street East. Northbound buses start their trips from the temporary stop on Victoria north of Adelaide East and skip their regular stops on Richmond Street East west of Church Street and at Victoria Street.

Westbound buses operate along their regular routes.

From 6 a.m. on Friday, October 9 until 6 a.m. on Thursday, October 15 (or earlier or later, depending on traffic conditions), eastbound buses operate along their regular routes to Adelaide Street East and Victoria Street, then detour:

northward along Victoria Street;
eastward along Queen Street East; and then
southward along Jarvis Street to Adelaide East,
resuming their regular route eastward along Adelaide.

Buses skip their regular stop on Adelaide Street East at Victoria Street. Instead they serve temporary stops on Victoria Street north of Adelaide Street East and at Queen Street East.

141 Downtown / Mt Pleasant express

Southbound buses operate along their regular route.

From 6 a.m. on Friday, October 9 until 6 a.m. on Thursday, October 15 (or earlier or later, depending on traffic conditions), northbound buses operate along their regular route to Adelaide Street East and Victoria Street, then detour:

northward along Victoria Street; and then
eastward along Shuter Street to Jarvis Street,
resuming their regular route northward along Jarvis.

Buses skip their regular stops on Adelaide Street East at Church Street and on Jarvis Street at Queen Street East. Instead they serve temporary stops on Victoria Street north of Adelaide Street East and at Queen Street East and on Shuter Street west of Jarvis Street.

508 Lake Shore

During the morning rush hours from Friday, October 9 until Wednesday, October 14, eastbound streetcars operate along their regular route.

During the afternoon rush hours, eastbound cars operate along their regular route to King Street East and Church Street, then proceed:

eastward along King East to Parliament Street,
ending their trips.

During both rush hours, westbound cars operate start their trips at King Street East and Parliament Street, then proceed:

westward along King Street East to Church Street,
resuming their regular route westward along King.

At King and Parliament Streets, streetcars loop:

northward along Parliament;
eastward along Dundas Street East;
southward along Broadview Avenue;
eastward along Queen and King Streets East to Parliament.

During the morning rush hours, streetcars serve all regular stops. During the afternoon rush hours, eastbound cars skip the stops on Church Street at Lombard Street and on Victoria Street at Queen Street East. Westbound cars skip the stops on Queen Street East at Church Street and on Church Street at Richmond, Adelaide and King Streets East.
