On Sunday, June 28, the Hamilton Street Railway revised several of its downtown routes to prepare for the City of Hamilton ‘s project to close MacNab Street South and the current MacNab Terminal and build a new downtown transit terminal.
The new transit terminal is part of a larger project to eliminate bus service from the south branch of King Street East — south of Gore Park — and turn that part of the street into a pedestrian mall. But, before that can happen, the City needs to build that new terminal.
During the first phase of the project, the HSR rerouted the buses that currently stop along MacNab Street South between King and Main Streets West. During the rest of 2009 and the first six months of 2010, the City will build the new terminal. When the terminal is ready, the HSR will reroute the buses that currently start and end their trips on the south side of Gore Park. (That will affect nine routes.)
For now, the HSR has permanently relocated the terminal of some of the buses that formerly operated along MacNab Street South to the Hamilton GO Centre. Buses operating on other routes that used MacNab South are using temporary terminals until the new terminal opens.
These changes represent the biggest rerouting of Hamilton transit services since the City introduced the one-way street system in April, 1956!
The HSR also revised routes and services elsewhere in the city as buses started operating with summer schedules.
The changes affected these routes: 1 King; 2 Barton; 3 Cannon; 4 Bayfront; 5 Delaware; 5B Main West; 5c West Hamilton; 6 Aberdeen; 7 Locke; 8 York; 9 Rock Gardens; 11 Parkdale; 21 Upper Kenilworth; 22 Upper Ottawa; 23 Upper Gage; 24 Upper Sherman; 27 Upper James; 33 Sanatorium; 34 Upper Paradise; 35 College; 41 Mohawk; 52 Dundas; 99 Waterfront Shuttle.
Specifically, the HSR: revised routes; resumed service along seasonal routes during the summer; adjusted the schedules of routes.
