GO northwest... to Kitchener (part 2)

The Kitchener - Waterloo Record reports today that GO Transit buses will carry commuters from Waterloo Region to Milton and Mississauga, starting this fall.

And, a GO media release today confirms that the federal and provincial governments are together contributing $2.5 million to build four “park ‘n’ ride” lots beside Highway 401 to serve passengers traveling on the buses.

According to the Record, buses will carry passengers from “park ‘n’ ride” lots in Kitchener and Cambridge to the Milton GO Station or the Mississauga City Centre Transit Terminal at Square One.

Within two years, the Record says, as many as 12 buses will operate along the route every day, serving between 800 and 1,200 passengers daily.

GO continues to study a proposal to extend train service to Kitchener, probably by 2011.

GO’s news release revealed that it would soon start work to build the first commuter parking lot at Highway 401 and Regional Highway 25 in Milton. Milton Transit’s long-term strategic plan already identified building that lot as a priority for future transit service in Milton.

In other news to interest transit fans, the Record also reported that the Region of Waterloo announced its rapid transit plan today. Waterloo’s proposed rapid transit system would operate electric trains along their own right-of-way between the north end of the City of Waterloo and the south end of the City of Kitchener. High-speed express buses would connect the southern train terminal with the City of Cambridge.

The new line would cost $790 million to build and serve 18 stations.
