Gardiner closed in both directions this weekend



The City of Toronto will close the Frederick G. Gardiner Expressway between the Humber River and Carlaw Avenue this weekend.

GO Transit will detour buses on these routes while the expressway is closed: 01 Lakeshore West; 09 Lakeshore East; 16 Hamilton QEW Express; 21 Milton; 31 Georgetown; 65 Barrie; 71 Stouffville.


65 Barrie

From 2 a.m. on Saturday, September 20 until 5 a.m. on Monday, September 22, westbound buses operate along their regular route to the Don Valley Parkway and Lake Shore Boulevard East, then proceed:

westward along Lake Shore;
southward along Yonge Street;
westward along Queens Quay West; and then
northward along Bay Street to the Union Station GO Bus Terminal,
ending their trips.

Eastbound buses operate along their regular route to Yonge Street and Lake Shore Boulevard, then detour:

eastward along Lake Shore;
southward along Cherry Street;
westward along Commissioners Street; and then
northward along Don Roadway to the Don Valley Parkway,
resuming their regular route northward along the Parkway.

31 Georgetown
16 Hamilton QEW Express

From 2 a.m. on Saturday, September 20 until 5 a.m. on Monday, September 22, eastbound buses operate along their regular route to the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard West (at the Humber River), then detour:

eastward along Lake Shore and Harbour Street; and then
northward along Bay Street to the Union Station GO Bus Terminal,
ending their trips.

Westbound buses start their trips at the Union Station GO Bus Terminal, as usual, then proceed:

southward along Yonge Street; and then
westward along Lake Shore Boulevard West to the Humber River,
resuming their regular routes westward along the Gardiner Expressway.

09 Lakeshore East

From 2 a.m. on Saturday, September 20 until 5 a.m. on Monday, September 22, westbound buses operate along their regular route to the Don Valley Parkway and Lake Shore Boulevard East, then proceed:

westward along Lake Shore;
southward along Yonge Street;
westward along Queens Quay West; and then
northward along Bay Street to the Union Station GO Bus Terminal,
ending their trips.

Eastbound buses operate along their regular route to Yonge Street and Lake Shore Boulevard, then detour:

eastward along Lake Shore;
southward along Cherry Street;

21 Milton

From 2 a.m. on Saturday, September 20 until 5 a.m. on Monday, September 22, eastbound buses operate along their regular route to the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard West (at the Humber River), then detour:

eastward along Lake Shore and Harbour Street; and then
northward along Bay Street to the Union Station GO Bus Terminal,
ending their trips.

Westbound buses start their trips at the Union Station GO Bus Terminal, as usual, then proceed:

southward along Yonge Street; and then
westward along Lake Shore Boulevard West to the Humber River,
resuming their regular routes westward along the Gardiner Expressway.

71 Stouffville

From 2 a.m. on Saturday, September 20 until 5 a.m. on Monday, September 22, westbound buses operate along their regular route to the Don Valley Parkway and Lake Shore Boulevard East, then proceed:

westward along Lake Shore;
southward along Yonge Street;
westward along Queens Quay West; and then
northward along Bay Street to the Union Station GO Bus Terminal,
ending their trips.

Eastbound buses operate along their regular route to Yonge Street and Lake Shore Boulevard, then detour:

eastward along Lake Shore;
southward along Cherry Street;
westward along Commissioners Street; and then
northward along Don Roadway to the Don Valley Parkway,
resuming their regular route northward along the Parkway.


The City will close the expressway for annual autumn repairs and maintenance, including:

  • grinding and paving the asphalt;
  • maintaining the expressway lighting;
  • cleaning catch basins to make sure they drain water properly;
  • maintaining traffic cameras;
  • maintaining signs;
  • repairing guide rails and the centre median; and
  • sweeping the roadway.
