Caribana This Weekend. Take Transit.

Toronto’s premiere Caribbean festival is this coming holiday weekend. People travelling into the city can expect significant crowds and traffic as thousands head to the festivities. The Toronto Transit Commission is running frequent special services between the subway and the parade route, so people coming into town on Saturday should take transit, if they hope to either attend the party, or avoid it.

Enchanced services operating at frequencies of a vehicle every one or two minutes can be found on the following routes on Saturday, August 5:

  • 29 DUFFERIN buses (from Dufferin station)
  • 509 HARBOURFRONT streetcars (from Union station)
  • 511 BATHURST streetcars (with additional buses) (from Bathurst station).

In addition, express buses operating at two-to-four minute intervals will be running to and from:

  • Keele station (to Parkside and Lakeshore)
  • Dundas West station (to Queen and Roncesvalles)
  • Lansdowne station (via Jameson to Springhurst and Dunn)

The festivities continue on Sunday and Monday at the Toronto Islands. To cover for this, more streetcars will be added to the 509 HARBOURFRONT and 510 SPADINA routes, providing service as frequent as every two minutes between Union Station and Queens Quay. Express buses will be operating at five to eight minute between the Ferry Docks, Union station and Bay station.

Don’t forget that Monday, August 7 is a civic holiday. The TTC will be on a summer holiday schedule on most of its routes. The subway will be operating at Sunday service levels, but will open at 6 a.m. The TTC’s Day Pass will provide unlimited travel on the TTC for up to six people at a time (maximum two adults) for just $8.50, on Saturday, Sunday or the Monday holiday.
