York Region Transit Strike Averted

A proposed contract between a York Region transit operator and its union was ratified yesterday by a vote among 192 workers driving 122 York Region Transit buses. If these workers had rejected this contract offer, selected York Region bus routes would have stopped operating on Thursday.

Because York Region Transit is a patchwork of former transit agencies, a number of routes are operated under different contracts. The contract that was under dispute now is held a company called Canar/Tokmakjian. Their routes are primarily found in Vaughan, although if their workers had walked out, some operations in Markham, Richmond Hill and King City would also have been affected.

Commuters can rest easy, however. Full York Region Transit service will continue for the foreseeable future.
