GO Transit Strike Watch

GO Train

GO Transit continues to watch from the sidelines as Canadian National continues to talk to the union representing its locomotive engineers. The two sides are approaching a strike deadline and, tomorrow morning, GO Transit riders could find themselves without train service on all lines, excepting Milton. This CBC article has more. The terms of Canadian Pacific’s lease on the Milton line precludes GO Transit scheduling enough extra trains to take up the slack on Lakeshore West.

The strike does not affect GO’s buses, but GO admits that its system would be overwhelmed by commuters stranded by the loss of train service. Local transit agencies would have to pick up the slack. The TTC has issued a press release stating that it believes it has enough capacity on its subways to serve GO passengers, and it recommends using local transit to access the subways at their terminals.

Talks are continuing. We will keep you posted as this story develops.

(Update): GO Transit will hold a news conference on the strike possibility today at 3:15 p.m. at their headquarters.
