Commuters on GO Transit can now use electronic smartcards to pay fares

Commuters can finally now use smartcards to ride the GO train after a launch yesterday at Oakville’s GO station, as the provincial government began rolling out the long-anticipated and overdue cards.

The Presto fare cards mean riders can load money onto the cards and have the right fare deducted on each leg of their trip, including city buses, GO Transit and some points on the TTC, by tapping on the green reader machines available in certain locations.

The fare card, in the works for four years and already employed in cities such as San Francisco and London, will be rolled out across the Lakeshore West line on the GO train, as well as the Burlington and Oakville transit systems and seven TTC stations. Those stations are: Union, Bloor / Yonge, College, Dundas, Queen’s Park, St. George and St. Patrick.
