Fire shuts part of subway line

By Sarah Boesveld

A fire on the subway shut down service between Jane and Kipling stations for over an hour yesterday, slowing the commute home for hundreds of riders. It also caused many riders to ask why shutdowns happen so often because of the smell of smoke at track level.

There are about five each week, says TTC spokesman Brad Ross. Sixty two per cent of delays because of smoke at track level are caused by an external source — smoke at street level blowing down into the station’s fans.

Yesterday’s blaze, at Islington station, was caused by a piece of litter hitting the third rail on the track, which is electrically charged.
