TTC to install subway suicide barriers

By Alex Wright

The TTC has decided to proceed with plans to install suicide barriers on subway platforms.

After consideration of a report about suicide prevention and the use of platform screen doors, TTC spokeswoman Jessica Martin confirmed yesterday that a 2011-2015 budget proposal will request funds for the project.

Deputy TTC chairman Joe Mihevc said the barriers will be installed first in the busiest stations, such as Union, St. George and Bloor-Yonge. He said the installations will be gradual, occurring on a station-by-station basis as funding becomes available. Mr. Mihevc said the estimated cost is approximately $10-million per station.

According to the report discussed yesterday, there were 18 subway suicide incidents in 2009.
