TTC, city lack cash to install suicide-prevention doors

Report recommends asking for funding in 2011-2015 budget submission

By Kelly Grant

The Toronto Transit Commission is one step closer to installing platform doors to prevent suicides, but the transit agency and the city are still a long way from funding the project.

At the commission’s monthly meeting Wednesday, commissioners received a report recommending they ask for money for the doors in their 2011-15 capital budget submission.

TTC staff are expected to return with a report this spring on what the doors would cost. Wednesday’s report estimated $10-million per station - the system has 69 stations - but chief general manager Gary Webster said that out-of-date figure was high.

In 2009, 18 people committed suicide on the TTC, causing about 23 hours of delays.
