Shortly after the Toronto Transit Commission unveiled an ambitious $6-billion transit plan, federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty indicated Toronto may not be receiving the money it’s counting on from Ottawa.

TTC Chair Adam Giambrone announced the plan Friday morning to build a 120-kilometre network of right-of-way streetcar lines across the city, but said the plan was contingent on receiving the majority of funds from both the federal and provincial governments.

Asked about whether Ottawa would be including money for the Toronto plan in the federal budget, Flaherty responded, “Oh my goodness, they just unveiled a plan today? The budget is Monday. I don’t think so. That’s not the way things work.”

However, he did say there will be lots of money for infrastructure in Monday’s budget.

Flaherty added that he looked forward to seeing the plan, how the city proposes to pay for it and what the consequences will be for taxpayers.
