Priority shift: From streetcars to sleek, modern lighter rail

A TTC delegation is gathering in Rome to check out the latest in light rail technology to replace our aging fleet of streetcars.

The Bombardier bendable car above, with driver locations at the front and back so it doesn’t have to turn around, is currently in use in Minneapolis. The TTC is also interested in a Siemens vehicle in use in Houston. Both are much lighter, and would be much quieter than our current streetcars like the one below, coming in for servicing at the TTC’s Hillcrest Yard on Bathurst St.

Light rail transit has exploded in the United States. Cities like New Orleans, San Jose, Little Rock, Phoenix, Portland and Memphis are all opening or building new LRT lines. Centres like Denver, Newark and Dallas are winning praise for their LRTs.
