Veterans and cadets ride free on GO Transit on VE Day's 60th anniversary

TORONTO, May 3, 2005 /CNW/ - On Victory in Europe Day’s 60th anniversary this Sunday, May 8, war veterans and cadets are invited to ride free on GO Trains and GO Buses.

The anniversary honours those who served in the Second World War and who remained on the home front, but also looks to the future, as represented by our youth.

GO Transit’s Chairman, Peter Smith, said GO’s gesture of appreciation will allow veterans and cadets to ride GO to get to VE Day celebrations at Toronto’s Exhibition Place and other locations.

Each veteran can ride free with one companion anytime all day on GO Transit. Veterans should wear or carry something to identify themselves, such as medals or blazers. The immediate family of a deceased veteran may ride free by carrying something that identifies the relation to the deceased veteran, such as an identification card or service papers. Cadets taking part in VE Day events can also ride free on GO all day, by wearing their uniform to identify themselves.

“We all join together this Sunday to remember our war heroes,” Smith said. “The people at GO Transit are glad we can make that day a little better for them.”

The 60th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day will be celebrated with events all afternoon at Exhibition Place. More information is available from the Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs at 416 325-9079; 32 Canadian Brigade Group at 416 633-6200; or the website.
