Mississauga to get new GO Train Station in North West

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Jan. 21 /CNW/ - Mississauga’s Lisgar community in the City’s North West will be home to a new GO station set to open in 2007. The announcement was made January 19th by the Province’s Transportation Minister Harinder Takhar and GO Transit Chairman Dr. Gordon Chong.

“We are very pleased that GO Transit’s plans include a new station for Mississauga,” said Mayor Hazel McCallion, a member of GO Transit’s Board. “This station will serve not only Ward 9 but the surrounding areas and supports a managed and smart approach to transit.”

Construction on the new station is expected to begin this fall on land at the northwest corner of 10th Line and CPR tracks at a cost of roughly $3.5 million. Approximately 24,000 riders commute each weekday on GO Transit’s Milton line, on which the Lisgar station will operate.

“Today’s announcement is long awaited in my community”, said Ward 9 Councillor Pat Saito. “It has been my goal for the past 13 years to have the planned Lisgar GO station become a reality and I am pleased that with the help of MPP Bob Delaney we have achieved it. The new station will provide Ward 9 residents as well as those living west of Mississauga with another commuter option to help alleviate traffic congestion. I was also pleased to hear that the Smart Card will be initiated in Mississauga in conjunction with the station opening and that all-day service is still being pursued.”
