Improvements make transit a better choice

Investment to Expand Parking Lot at GO Station

TORONTO, June 18 /CNW/ - GO Transit is improving services by expanding the Ajax GO Station parking lot to accommodate more vehicles, Transportation Minister Harinder Takhar announced today.

“By investing in GO Transit we are making the service more convenient and reliable. That will attract more riders, which will ease gridlock and make life better for transit users and drivers,” said Takhar.

GO Transit is investing $830,000 to expand the parking lot by approximately 270 spaces, to accommodate more than 1,500 vehicles. Construction is expected to start in July and finish in September 2004. The contract was awarded to Loc Pave Construction Limited of Gormley, Ontario.

The Ajax station is located on the Lakeshore East GO train line, which runs between Union Station and Oshawa. About 6,500 commuters use the station daily.

“Transit really is the only way to go,” said GO Transit Chairman Dr. Gordon Chong. “We’re continually upgrading our stations and our bus and train fleets to provide the best and most attractive service to passengers.”

“The GO system carries the equivalent of 48 highway lanes of traffic during rush hour. Imagine Toronto rush hour without this crucial transit system,” said Takhar.

GO Transit is Ontario’s only inter-regional public transit system, carrying more than 44 million passengers a year, linking Toronto with the surrounding regions.
