TTC puts fare hike on hold

Toronto The Toronto Transit Commission postponed plans for a fare hike Wednesday, choosing to wait until after this spring’s provincial budget before it raises ticket prices.

The TTC has said it would have to raise fares unless the province helps it make up an estimated budget shortfall of $48 million.

If Ontario doesn’t come through, single-ride fares are expected to rise by up to 25 cents.

However, the TTC estimates that even a 10-cent increase would result in the loss of about four million fare purchases annually.

That estimate rises to 15 million lost rides if the fare increase is 25 cents.
