Expanding Pearson

The current expansion at Pearson Airport, designed to cope with passenger traffic forecasted to rise to 50 million in 2020, has a number of elements. They include:

A new terminal, currently dubbed T1-New, to replace the current Terminal 1 and 2 and, eventually, Terminal 3. Current construction costs are about $1-million a day.

A new 13,200-parking garage, the largest in Canada.

Two new runways, one completed and another under construction, for a total of six runways.

A new, 600-metre tunnel that runs under one of the runways to allow for uninterrupted service to new infield cargo facilities, also under construction.

A new Federal Express cargo facility under construction on Pearson Airport lands.

A new hangar, to be completed in the fall, could house three 747s. Another hangar for general aviation will also be ready this fall.

An on-airport people-mover transit system could connect to a possible rail link to Pearson now being discussed by the federal Transport department.
