TTC Commissioners Reject Abandoning PCC Streetcars

By James Bow
Transit Toronto News Archive - September 28, 1999

The commissioners overseeing the TTC voted overwhelmingly to reject a report which recommended ridding the system of the two remaining PCCs and the single Peter Witt on TTC property. Earlier, a report noted that the funds raised from charter services did not cover the cost of maintaining and operating the heritage equipment, and it suggested that the vehicles be donated to the Halton County Radial Railway. The meeting where this report was tabled, was attended by a number of railfans who requested that the PCCs remain on Toronto streets, and the TTC commissioners agreed that the streetcars were too strong a symbol to vacate Toronto. The TTC will now investigate ways to obtain funding to restore these cars to running order, and even return the Peter Witt car to the streets.
