TTC and Toronto Police demonstrate new streetcar watch program

TORONTO, June 18 /CNW/ - The Toronto Transit Commission and

Toronto Police are previewing a new Streetcar Watch Safety Program at Hillcrest Complex at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 22, 1999. The program involves Operators recording the make, model and licence numbers of vehicles failing to stop for streetcars picking up or dropping off passengers. This information will then be sent to Toronto Police Service. Under the Highway Traffic Act, motorists are required to stop two meters behind open doors of a streetcar when passengers are getting on or off. 132 people have been injured since 1991 by vehicles failing to stop for streetcars at TTC stops.
