Scarboro Reeve Favors Dropping Subway Case

Page 4:

Scarboro’s Reeve A.E. Campbell told Metropolitan Council yesterday he will recommend that the township cease legal opposition to the Bloor-University subway. Mr. Campbell said he will submit his recommendation to Scarboro Council today. Etobicoke has already informed Metro that it is withdrawing subway opposition.

Three of the five suburban municipalities remain who opposed the project before the Ontario Municipal Board and later contested the board’s endorsement of the subway in an appeal lost before the Ontario Court of Appeal. They are Long Branch, New Toronto and Mimico.

Reeve Campbell’s announcement brought a rebuke from Mimico’s Mayor Gus Edwards, who asked the reeve to consider the tremendous cost of the project to Scarboro and other suburbs.

“Nobody is going to intimidate Long Branch”, commented Reeve Marie Curtis. She said the village council will make up its own mind on whether to proceed to the Supreme Court of Canada with an appeal against the subway.
