TTC Fears Fare Raise If Subway Delayed

Delay in starting construction of the Bloor-University subway might force a TTC fare increase in 1959, TTC Chairman Lamport said last night.

The TTC previously had indicated that the basic 12½-cent fare would continue at least until 1960. Construction was scheduled to start this month on the $200,000,000 subway route.

Mr. Lamport said any increase in subway costs as a result of court action taken by five suburban municipalities would have to be charge to the fare box.

“Unless Metro is prepared to underwrite this cost”, added the TTC chairman, who was reluctant to indicate what length of delay would result in a fare increase.

The TTC has estimated that each day of subway delay since the Ontario Municipal Board approval of the project Aug. 29, has added $1,000 to the project’s cost…
